“Shumilikha” Route
The
route is found at the southern border of the preserve, it goes along the Shumilikha river
valley and it is about 14 km long. During a day visitors have an opportunity to see all
the altitude belts with their own eyes, to follow the vegetation changes from the Baikal
shore to the Alpine lakes. Along the route the glacial forms of relief, the vegetal and
animal worlds of the preserve are vividly represented.
The Shumilikha river valley is located at the north-east shore of
Baikal Lake, at the southern border of the Barguzin Preserve. The river flows into
Sosnovka bay, which is 30 km from the preserve’s headquarters in Davsha. The access to
the Shumilikha river valley is complicated. In the south-east there are the picks of the
Barguzin mountain range, in the north there is Baikal. For that reason the only
transportation in summer are boats, and that in winter are vehicles along the Baikal ice
road. One could accommodate himself in a winter hut.
The trail starts at the Baikal shore and goes along it southwards on
the edge of moraine. From the cone of the âûíîñ to the delta of the Fudaldy river in
the north there is a wide, 2km long sand beach. Here a series of the bank swells, from the
modern at the water to the ancient far ashore, is developed. On the shore bear tracks can
be met quite often. If lucky you can even see a bear out for his prey.
In 200
metres the trail comes up to the Shumilikha river, with a wooden bridge over it, and then
the trail goes over to the left side of the river, a few metres along the side and then
turns left.
Then an ascent begins (the steepness of the slope is 12° ). At the 2nd km
of the way there is another winter hut, here the group can holt after the steep ascent.
Further the route goes up the path on the left side of the river, along the moraine. At
the 5500m mark there is an observation platform. At the 6200m mark the trail crosses the
snow-slip lot, where the signs of the past snow-slips can be viewed. Then the group goes
200 m through êóðóìíèê. At the 6th km of the trail there are streams
with bridges over them. Up to the 8000 m mark there are minor ascents and discents,
boulders are met. At 8200 m the trail goes to the right side of the river along the
two-log bridge. At 9150 m, at the uper Shumilikha, there is waterfall, a 40-metre cascade
of streams. The waterfall is the most attractive site along the route. After the 9100 m
mark the trail crosses a clearing and goes on ascending the next 800 m, and at 10000 m
itreaches the equipped rest area. After that the trail goes further along small creaks and
leads to the bank of the second lake. Further in the valley there is a row of lakes, the
sources of the Shumilikha river – 11000 m.
